What Are You Holding Onto?
Letting Go to Grow | August Series
There is something about August that feels different.
The days are still warm, but we can sense a new season approaching. Children head back to school. Parents help pack dorm rooms. Families settle into new routines. Some women are celebrating exciting new beginnings, while others are quietly grieving endings they never expected.
Transitions have a way of bringing to the surface what we've been carrying. One of the questions I often ask women in counseling is: "What are you holding onto that may no longer be serving you?" It's a simple question, but it often opens the door to meaningful reflection.
Maybe you're carrying fear about the future.
Maybe you're holding onto guilt over a decision you wish you could change.
Maybe you're weighed down by resentment, grief, anxiety, or the pressure to keep everyone else happy.
Emotional burdens rarely become lighter by ignoring them. Over time, they often grow heavier.
Why We Hold On
Many of the things we carry developed for a reason. Control may have helped us navigate uncertainty. Perfectionism may have earned approval. People pleasing may have protected relationships. Anxiety may have convinced us we were prepared for whatever came next. The very things that once helped us cope can eventually become the things that keep us stuck.
Healing begins when we recognize that what helped us survive a difficult season may no longer be helping us live the life God is inviting us into today.
The Invitation to Let Go
Letting go doesn't mean forgetting. It doesn't mean pretending the hurt never happened. It doesn't mean giving up. It means releasing our grip on burdens that were never ours to carry forever.
Jesus offers one of the most comforting invitations in Scripture:
"Come to me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest."
Matthew 11:28
Notice He doesn't ask us to have everything figured out before we come to Him. He simply invites us to come. There is such freedom in knowing we don't have to carry every burden alone.
A Moment to Reflect
As you begin this new month, spend a few quiet moments asking yourself:
• What thoughts keep replaying in my mind?
• What burden have I been carrying on my own?
• What expectations have I placed on myself that God never asked me to carry?
• What might change if I trusted God with this area of my life?
You don't have to answer every question today. Just begin the conversation. Awareness is often the first step toward healing.
A Prayer for This Week
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for inviting us to bring every burden to You. Too often, we carry fear, guilt, disappointment, anxiety, and the pressure to hold everything together far longer than You ever intended.
As we begin this new season, help us recognize what we've been holding onto that no longer serves us. Give us the courage to release the burdens You never asked us to carry and the wisdom to trust You with the things beyond our control.
Replace our striving with Your peace, our fear with Your presence, and our weariness with renewed hope. Remind us that we never have to walk through life's challenges alone because You are always with us.
As we take each step forward, help us grow in faith, trust, and freedom. May we find rest in Your promises and the confidence to leave our burdens in Your hands.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
You Don't Have to Carry It Alone
At Vine & Branch Counseling, we believe healing happens when people are given a safe place to be honest, supported with evidence based counseling, and reminded that hope is always possible.
If you've been carrying more than you were ever meant to carry, please know you don't have to do it alone.
We would be honored to walk alongside you.
