The Weight of Control
Letting Go to Grow – Vine & Branch
There is a quiet exhaustion that comes from trying to control things that were never ours to carry.
If you've ever laid awake at night replaying conversations, worrying about someone you love, trying to predict every possible outcome, or feeling responsible for fixing everyone else's problems, you're not alone.
Many of us spend an incredible amount of emotional energy trying to manage things that are ultimately outside our control.
We tell ourselves that if we just think about it a little longer, worry a little harder, or plan a little better, we'll finally find peace.
But peace rarely comes from control.
More often, it comes from surrender.
Understanding Your Circle of Control
One of the concepts we frequently discuss with clients is the Circle of Control.
Although we cannot control another person's choices, unexpected circumstances, or the future, there is one area that always remains within our control:
Our TFB—our Thoughts, Feelings, and Behaviors.
Our thoughts influence how we feel.
Our feelings influence how we respond.
When our thoughts become consumed with fear, worst-case scenarios, or unrealistic expectations, our emotions often follow. We may feel anxious, overwhelmed, discouraged, or stuck.
The good news is that while we cannot always choose our circumstances, we can learn to examine our thoughts and intentionally choose responses that align with truth rather than fear.
The Weight We Were Never Meant to Carry
Many women carry burdens they were never designed to hold.
The weight of making everyone happy.
The weight of protecting their children from every disappointment.
The weight of fixing relationships.
The weight of predicting the future.
The weight of perfection.
Over time, those burdens become heavy.
Not because we're weak—but because they were never ours to carry.
When we continually focus on things outside our circle of control, anxiety naturally grows.
When we shift our attention back to what is within our circle of control, we often begin to experience greater clarity, confidence, and peace.
A Simple Practice This Week
When you notice anxiety beginning to rise, pause and ask yourself:
Is this inside my Circle of Control?
If the answer is no, practice releasing it to God.
If the answer is yes, ask yourself:
What thought am I believing right now?
Because our thoughts shape our feelings, and our feelings influence how we respond.
Sometimes changing one thought can change the entire direction of our day.
A Biblical Perspective
Scripture reminds us that God never asked us to carry tomorrow.
He invites us to trust Him one day at a time.
"Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you."
1 Peter 5:7
What a beautiful invitation.
Not to hold tighter.
Not to try harder.
But to release what was never ours to carry.
Reflection
As you move through this week, consider these questions:
What have I been trying to control that is outside my Circle of Control?
What thoughts are shaping my emotions today?
What would change if I trusted God with the things I cannot control?
Sometimes healing doesn't begin when our circumstances change.
Sometimes it begins when we change where we place our focus.
A Prayer for This Week
Heavenly Father,
We come before You carrying burdens that often feel too heavy for us to bear. Too often, we try to control things that were never ours to hold, other people's choices, uncertain outcomes, and tomorrow's worries.
Forgive us for the times we've allowed fear to guide our thoughts instead of trusting in Your promises.
Help us remember that while we cannot control everything around us, we can surrender our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to You. Renew our minds with Your truth, calm our anxious hearts, and help our responses reflect Your peace and grace.
Teach us to release what is outside our circle of control and to faithfully steward what You have placed within it. When anxiety begins to rise, remind us that You are already holding every detail of our lives.
Thank You for being our refuge, our strength, and our constant source of peace.
Today, we choose to trust You more than our fears.
In Jesus' name,
Amen. 🌿
