The Courage to Begin Again
Sometimes starting over sounds exciting.
Other times, it feels like evidence that something didn't work.
A relationship changed.
A career ended.
A child left home.
A plan fell apart.
We made a mistake.
Life simply turned out differently than we expected.
There are seasons when beginning again isn't something we choose.
It's simply where we find ourselves.
Starting Again Isn't Starting From Nothing
One of the fears that accompanies change is the feeling that we're back at the beginning.
But we rarely begin again empty-handed.
We bring experience.
Wisdom.
Lessons.
Greater self-awareness.
Evidence that we've survived things we once weren't sure we could survive.
You may be starting something new.
But you are not the same woman who started the last chapter.
Grieve What You Thought Would Be
Before rushing toward what's next, sometimes we need to acknowledge what didn't happen.
The relationship you imagined.
The career you expected.
The family relationship you hoped would heal.
The season of life you thought would feel different.
Grief isn't reserved only for death.
We can grieve dreams, expectations, relationships, identities, and futures we once pictured.
Giving ourselves permission to acknowledge that loss can make it easier to move forward without pretending it didn't matter.
You Don't Have to Feel Ready
We often wait for confidence before taking action.
But courage frequently works in the opposite direction.
We take a small step while we're still afraid.
Confidence grows afterward.
Perhaps beginning again means making a phone call.
Applying for something.
Returning to counseling.
Trying something differently.
Walking into a room where you don't know anyone.
Or simply allowing yourself to imagine that your story isn't finished.
Don't Demand the Entire Plan
When we're uncertain, we often want to know how everything will unfold before taking the first step.
But most meaningful changes don't offer that kind of certainty.
Instead of asking yourself to figure out the next ten steps, ask:
What is the next right step?
Just one.
That's enough for today.
Faith for New Beginnings
In Isaiah 43:19, God reminds His people that He is doing something new.
Sometimes new things don't initially feel exciting.
They feel unfamiliar.
Uncertain.
Maybe even unwanted.
But unfamiliar doesn't mean God is absent.
We can trust that He is present in the beginnings we chose and the beginnings we never would have chosen for ourselves.
Reflection Questions
What ending or change am I still grieving?
What have I learned from the season I'm leaving?
Where might I be waiting to feel ready before taking a step?
What is one next right step?
Where might God be doing something new that I can't fully see yet?
A Prayer for Beginning Again
Heavenly Father,
Beginning again can feel frightening.
There are parts of my story I wish had turned out differently and things I still don't understand.
Help me make room to grieve what was lost without becoming afraid of what comes next.
Remind me that I am not beginning from nothing.
I carry lessons, wisdom, strength, and evidence of Your faithfulness with me.
When I want to see the entire road before moving, give me courage for just the next step.
When the future feels uncertain, help me trust that You are already there.
Open my eyes to the new things You may be doing, even when they don't yet look the way I expected.
Give me courage to begin again.
And remind me that my story is still being written.
Amen.
